Increasingly throughout the month, the Pie Hole will be decorated for Halloween! All day on the 31st there will be candy apples and popcorn balls behind the counter for trick-or-treaters and anyone else adventurous enough to come in wearing a Halloween costume.

Well, we probably all had other means of getting by at home, whether it's through savings we'd collected, an occupation we're more accustomed to, or just the providence of our situation.

[ they had enough alchemiters back on the meteor to provide them everything they needed, after all. aside from apple juice and blood. ]

When we arrive here, it's with nothing, but from that nothing we have to make our existence. Many of us find ourselves starting from scratch, while others never had that start before at all.

That's simply the way of things, I think. Your hands are empty, but necessity will force you to make use of what they hold either way.

[ He nods in agreement. ]

Thank goodness they do give you some accommodations, no matter how-- [ ... "Meager," though probably not the word he should use. ] simple. But it's not a bad thing, having to make your own way. I think it builds a lot of strength and character.

Even if you're just working to reclaim a part of your old life, it's something to put your heart into. Are you -- um... is that why you're doing it, or do you have another reason?

Not really, no.

[ she pinches her lips together tightly. nothing from her old life would be available here. she's not sure that she'd want it back, anyway, living alone in the middle of nowhere doesn't hold the same appeal anymore, no matter how safe it may have been.

that doesn't mean there aren't other things she wish she could have again, of course. ] That isn't really an option for me. I'm just trying to survive with the options I do have.

That's something more people ought to learn how to do, honestly.

[ He raises his eyebrow, then glances down to take a careful bite of his pie. ]

Because... you know, there's plenty that's possible to have here that isn't possible anywhere else. Time, life, everything means a little something different.

[ she still plays with her form idly, cutting off a corner and contemplating it before finally taking it in. ]

People you wouldn't be able to otherwise see. Even the planet itself, in some cases.

Right.

[ Well -- to the first part. He gives her a slightly nervous look at the second, but doesn't comment. ]

Um, the opportunity to rewrite things hopefully for the better. [ Sometimes literally. ] If nothing else the chance is there. There's no sense in not seizing some kind of destiny.

[ rewriting things... but she'd rather just read what someone else wrote. even if it's metaphorical, it seems like she's had a lot of people tell her that she should be writing things. but it's probably just confirmation bias. ]

I'm not sure that I really believe in destiny. Not like that, at least. If destiny is a thing, it's more of a prison than an opportunity. "Seizing" one is, however, a very interesting contradiction in terms.

[ but that's just being pedantic. ] I do see the point you're making, though. We have to determine our lives or they'll be determined for us, or more likely just stagnate under our negligence.

[ He clears his throat and sips his coffee, his nose wrinkling slightly. ]

It's too easy to let life get away from you if you just sit by and watch. I've fallen prey to wondering if I can really make a difference, sometimes. When the world acts like it's against you, that's all-- [ A sigh. ] But there is always something else, I think.

[ He wants to believe, anyway. Man he's kind of a downer around teenagers. ]

Uh -- destiny or not, most of us are capable of a lot more than we think.

[ it doesn't help when most of the teenagers he deals with are pretty big downers on their own. they just feed into each other until all the gravity makes everything feel like it's on jupiter. ]

I suppose it all depends on what sort of difference you'd really care to make. I mean, sure this world is certainly different from my own, but I always assumed most of the changing would have to be mine to fit within it.

Which isn't to say I'll accept all of it, of course. Just that it's a bit too big for one person, superpowers or no.

[ It's a downer hurricane. ]

It's a give and take sometimes. Here-- before we can make a difference we need to settle any other differences with ourselves. We're probably all doing something different than we planned.

[ Or someone? ]

But are you doing all right? Surely there's some good about it.

That's just how it is with plans, isn't it? Three years ago, I saw my life taking a very different direction than it has now.

[ maybe she expected the game at least, and the end of their civilization, but prospit never showed her everything else. she expected it would be much...simpler. happier. ]

There has to be some good, doesn't there? It's that good which keeps us going, gives us the motivation.

And maybe, just for that good, it might even all be worth it.

I think so.

[ Nelson doesn't like to think that it's less "good" and more "Hooded Justice" that's keeping him going now. It certainly didn't used to be, but time is cruel. ]

I'm sorry, we should talk about something else. [ SELF-AWARENESS. ] Sometimes if I'm not careful I let myself get stuck back in the past. That doesn't really lend itself to easy conversation.

[ well, kanaya would be lying if her own good wasn't mostly rose, but she has a lot of other friends she's grateful for, as well. the people that she's met encompass most of what she enjoys about the city, but by the same token it's those she's lost that are the worst of it. ]

Well, what about Arrested Restraint, then? Had you found the chance to read the final installment yet?

[ Oh shit. He looks every bit as on-the-spot as he feels, though it disappears from his face quickly enough as he draws his eyebrows down more seriously. Kanaya you are really not the target audience (though who is?)!! ]

Well, no, not exactly. It's not really my brand of literature, although-- [ Carefully: ] I heard people took exception with the ending. Um-- but I thought it seemed-- you probably didn't like it, did you?

[ you haven't read it but you know about the ending? quit being so tsun for the series, nelson, she can tell you're a fan. ]

Actually, I...well, given the way the series had progressed up to that point I thought... [ man, it's kind of uncomfortable to mention now that he brings it up that way. she ducks her head and eyes her pie. ] I thought it was about the best ending we could expect. It...fit, it was real, do you know what I mean?

[ It's not like he likes it or anything!! u///u

He purses his lips slightly, looking at her curiously. That's the first time he's heard someone actually agree with his intention. It's a little uncomfortable, yes, that it's this teenage girl (what does that even say?) but there's something reassuring that someone else understands. ]

I do know. Um... yes, and I think you're right. Not everyone's story ends the way they planned it, there's something to be said for making sure you're with the people you want to be. [ A pause. ] I mean when it comes to romance. In a novel.

And there was a somewhat hopeful note at the end, wasn't there? I mean, it can certainly look depressing if you're only examining the events from some general cultural standard of death, but...they did, didn't they? Reunite, I mean.

There was a chance, at least, and that can't be all bad. What else would Nora have left otherwise?

[ it may be a bit of a red flag to have kanaya be the one to understand it, given her own history. but he wouldn't know about any of that, which is probably the only reason she could talk openly about this without him freaking out on her. ]

[ He nods absently, but in agreement. Still -- best to be careful. While it's concerning, it's not quite alarming enough at this point, given that they're discussing a work of fiction. Still. He knows to tread lightly. ]

From what I can tell, it sounds like it was meant to be a happy ending. As much as the characters could ask for, that is -- or, um, deserved. I'm sure if she were real she would find something else to live for. [ Maybe. ] In books everything's allowed to be simpler.

Mm. Eventually, I'm sure.

[ she silences herself with a bite of pie before she can say something stupid like "though sometimes you just have to die first to find it." ]

I suppose it must be very different when death still means something, when it has that permanence we don't often face anymore.

In one way.

[ He takes the moment of silence to take a bite himself, as well as a sip of coffee. He's a little less tense, though not quite crossing the line into "wistful" yet. ]

On the other hand, no matter how long dead a person is, that might not always be the case around here. Even if it's only here that you might get to see them again. I think that's a little hopeful. Though -- also unsettling.

[ she lets out a long, frustrated hum, shaking her head. ]

They won't always see it that way. And I can't entirely blame them, how would you feel to learn you have only death ahead in your future?

[ His eyebrows raise slightly. It's a good question; all Nelson knows of his future is that the Crimebusters fail, because it was also his present. How does Hooded Justice feel?

Angry. ]

... If it were an accident I'd wonder if this was supposed to be some kind of fresh opportunity. A new start, maybe. As hopeless as the future might seem at times, you can at least make the most of the present.

[ which is how kanaya wishes nepeta could take it, that she wasn't so intent on them no longer being friends just because there's nothing that can be done to change her future.

kanaya at least wanted to see her avenged, but she had no success executing it. but that doesn't mean she never cared. ]

And what if it isn't an accident?

Well...

[ It isn't murder that comes to Nelson's mind first, but rather the other thing. His eyebrows furrow, lips pursing a little tightly. ]

Then I guess it might be a disappointment.

Now there's an understatement if ever one was made.

[ she doesn't want to get into the details of her nepeta problems, they don't really have a solution and the whole discussion's taken a more serious turn than she intended. all the same, he seems to understand a bit more than she would have expected. ]

They may get the wrong idea, start thinking there's something to do to prevent it.
