are you alright? | open
WHO: Lucinda Guthrie, X-Men faculty, students, and visitors.
WHERE: Kitchen & dining room.
WHEN: Early morning.
WARNINGS:
SUMMARY: Mrs. Guthrie has been offered a room and use of facilities in the Xavier Institute. She's been sending her kids here for years, but this is the first time she's actually lived under their roof. She decides, clearly, she should introduce herself with a hearty Southern breakfast.
FORMAT: Anything.
She had been here for something like two nights which was long enough to convince her that maybe this wasn't a cruel dream or hallucination. Joshua felt real. Samuel felt real. Paige felt real. Her three oldest were here and relatively safe and alive. Most of the X-Men she heard about were here too which was mildly comforting. Though Lucinda would be lying if she didn't miss her younger children. Everyone was reassuring her they were safe back home and that dulled down her worries a tad, but it didn't stop the heartache at missing taking care and seeing her babies everyday.
She woke up early unable to fall back asleep. The bed was new and foreign to her. The clothes were strange. Her whole environment was another world entirely to her. Lucinda sighed and pulled a bathrobe tightly around her body. She pulled on some slippers and tip toed down the stairs as to not to disturb the heightened senses of some of the housemates. She found the kitchen after a little difficulty and began searching the fridge and cub boards for pans, eggs, bacon, toast, butter--the works.
If anything, she could at least surprise everyone with breakfast and make it feel a little bit more like Kentucky.

And to tell the truth, she was almost frightened of that.
The redhead had arrived at the Institute early on Sunday to start planning her next lesson. She figured it was about time she made up a strict regime for her students to follow so they could stay healthy. Swinging by the kitchen first for a snack, she paused in the doorway as she saw a woman there, already rummaging around, presumably searching for food. A slightly amused look crossed Scatty's face; she did not know this woman, but she immediately struck her as someone who took charge of things.
Silently stepping towards the countertop and the ever-present bowl of fruit, she took an apple, before turning her attention back to the woman. "Good morning," she said lightly.

Something good.
She was a staff member and student here... she was pretty sure that meant she was allowed to partake of the group meals, so she headed toward the yummy smells and found herself standing in the door of the kitchen where Mrs. Guthrie was at work. Helpful instincts took over and after softly clearing her voice to make sure she did not entirely startle the woman, she spoke. "Can I help?"

Without missing a beat, Lucinda ordered, "Can you put some toast in the toaster an' see if we have any potatoes?"

With slightly less enthusiasm (not that it was really possible to tell with Maggie) she checked cool dry storage for potatoes, but she reminded herself that whoever this lady was, she was unlikely to leave them half-peeled and half-cooked like her little sister had a habit of doing.
"Wow," she said as she pulled out a sack of potatoes, looking at the eggs and bacon cooking. "A real American breakfast." There was that little hint of an accent to Maggie's voice ((American dub voice notwithstanding)) that suggested she herself was not American.
no subject
"At least a part of America," she smiled warmly. "Oh good, they've got 'em here. Time to peel now."
no subject
It occurred to her that she probably forgot something as part of their conversation. "Oh. I'm Maggie, by the way."

Aw, ma. He wouldn't be able to sneak away to work without her shoving some sort of food in his mouth now.
"You're up bright and early," he told her as he leaned against the doorway.
no subject
"You've been in the city too long boy you forget what a good long day's work is. We used to start at the break of dawn every single mornin' even when Ah had grammar school." She left her potatoes and washed her hands with a cloth. "Have you been sleepin' this whole time? Where's Jay and Paige?"
no subject
He had two jobs and was on two teams! He could sleep in if he wanted. Well, X-force wasn't even in the city right now, but STILL.

Lucinda turned her back on Sam to return to her potato peeling. If no one was going to peel the potatoes, someone had to roll up her sleeves and get right down to work!
"And what's this about Paige still livin' off on her own? She's too good to be with her brothers?"
no subject
"Uh, well Ah used to too. Ah lived with X-force, and Paige lives with her friend Monet." Sam shrugged. "She likes the independent thing, and Ah've been with X-force since Ah first got ported in here."

She ducked her head into the kitchen and almost chuckled. Mrs. Guthrie, of course. Because if anyone was going to mother hen and try and feed the entire institute, it was going to be her.
"Good morning, Mrs. Guthrie. I'm Rachel, we haven't met yet."
no subject
"Rachel, Rachel. Ah don't think Ah didn't, but Sammy mighta mentioned a thing or two 'bout you. Well, there's breakfast on the table if you're hungry. Best be startin' early before all the young ones wake up."

She telekinetically pulled a plate toward her as she grabbed a spoon to serve up some of the eggs.
"This looks wonderful, ma'am. Thanks."

Out of the corner of her eye, she spotted the TK. She was relatively unfazed, having been dealing with kids randomly sprouting super powers at a moment's turn and now she had powers. She just didn't know what.
"That'd be useful."
no subject
Taking a bite of bacon she belatedly realized she should try and have some manners. "You can leave the dishes, I'll help you in a bit, you should sit down and eat while it's all still hot."

Fully dressed for the day, despite not having to go to work until much later, Amara immediately went to greet Mrs. Guthrie. Maybe she had been drawn to the fact that there was a mother here, something Amara hadn't had in a while, but mostly it was because she just liked Sam's mother-- a hard worker, earnest, and kind hearted.
"Good morning, Mrs. Guthrie. Did you sleep well?" She pulled down some plates from the cupboards and started setting the table while Mrs. Guthrie cooked. Amara wasn't good with cooking, so she wouldn't be much help there, but she could set out dishes, cups, and silverware.

"If there's anything you need, please ask me. Not that Sam, Jay or Paige won't have you taken care of," Amara quickly amended. No doubt Sam would make sure that his mother was happy here because if Momma wasn't happy, no one was happy.

BECK I AM... SO SORRY...
Oh. She had not seen Mrs. Guthrie since her initial post (which had been... voice... so technically she had not seen her there either), and she seemed... busy right now. And Sooraya did not want to be a bother--that was why she was going to slip back out into the hallway and up the stairs, instead of talking to her. It had nothing to do with the fact that the last time she had seen her she had started sobbing all over her and begged for her forgiveness. Nothing at all. Also, she totally wasn't loud enough with her footsteps to be noticeable as she slunk off, or anything. I MEAN, CLEARLY.
