SUMMARY: Luke is trying to concentrate, which means you/someone/everyone should come disrupt him as much as possible.

Feeling he'd been woefully neglecting his training, Luke had decided to leave off lesson plans and work for an afternoon in favor of going out to meditate a little in the park. It wasn't a clear day, but at least the sun was out, and it shone brightly and warmly in the spot he'd chosen. Warmth--one of the few things he missed about Tatooine. Space, he'd learned when he left for the Rebellion at 19, was cold, and so was this place.

But the Force, when he touched it after quieting his mind of extraneous thoughts (Mara, the much younger Ben who didn't remember him or his father, who had disappeared from the city again), was warm too, and Luke let it fill his body in preparation for the training exercises he'd planned for today.

Flipping back to her feet, Selina took a seat once more. She shrugged at the comment. "I keep doing it by myself. And I was going to be in a circus before I woke up in this place. Bet I'd have learned a lot of stuff there."

Of course, everyone seemed to think she'd be going back. So maybe she still would.

"A circus? Really?" Luke remembered when various performing acts would come to Mos Eisley, and the rare occasions when his aunt and uncle would take him to see them. Some of the ones he'd seen involved gladiatorial battles between beasts and beings alike; others were more focused on fantastic things. He could see how a gymnast could fit right in with the latter.

"I bet you'd be spectacular," he said with an encouraging smile. While her presence might not be distinct from all the other life in the city, her emotions rippled out like little waves, and something in it told Luke she needed kind words.

"Maybe." That really hadn't been her concern, but somehow, she thought maybe he would understand. "It was more that it was a place to stay."

"You wanted to leave home." It wasn't a question; Luke knew well the strong pull to get out away from where you grew up, strike out on your own and see the galaxy. But Selina seemed awful young for that--why, she couldn't be older than Ben was, and Ben had just turned fourteen not that long ago.

She began pulling grass out of the ground, one blade at a time. "I don't have a home anymore."

Luke looked away, quiet, a little thread of pain making its way into his chest. Someone else who had lost family somehow, lost a home and people she loved. It wasn't as uncommon as it used to be, not by a long shot.

"I'm sorry," he said. "I know that's not much, but I know it's tough to lose your home."

Selina shrugged. "It wasn't like it was a great home anyway. I do better by myself." It wasn't entirely true, but it wasn't far from the truth either.

"Still, there's something special about it if you can call it home," Luke said gently. "Something that other places don't have." He was quiet a moment. One of the rubber balls levitated into his palm, and he turned it over and over in his hands, thoughtfully.

"...Maybe." She isn't exactly going to argue with Luke Skywalker.

"I guess it depends on what you think of home as," he said, then quieted again. Home, for Luke, was wherever Mara was. He just hoped one day she'd feel the same about him. Again.

The mess of timelines here made it so confusing.

"Someplace safe."She thought that over a minute, then nodded. Home didn't really mean people for her. People usually just made things worse.

"I think that's a good thing for a home to be," he agreed, smiling. "Somewhere where you can let your guard down, right?"

"No. You can't ever let it down." At least not on the streets where she lived. No place was ever really secure.

Maybe that meant it wasn't home.

"Never?" he prodded gently. "There isn't ever a time when you're completely relaxed?"

"Sometimes when I'm sleeping, I guess." She shredded a bit of grass. When she wasn't having nightmares.

"No other times?" Luke smiled, voice turning a little teasing. "Not even right now? I don't think I'm that threatening!"

Selina looked a little embarrassed, glancing away. "No, you're okay." she mumbled.

"Hey." He put his hand on Selina's shoulder, smiling at her. "It's hard. Don't feel bad if you can't now. But if you ever need to talk or anything, well... that's what a Jedi's for."

There was a serenity to his demeanor, a sincerity in his words that said that Luke meant all of it. If she couldn't feel safe with a Jedi, with someone who was supposed to protect people like her, then who could she feel safe with?

"But let's talk about something else. It's sure too nice out to be unhappy." He smiled. "So other than gymnastics, do you have anything else you like to do?"

"Uh, well..." She wasn't sure if this was the sort of thing that a person like him would approve of. "I'm a pretty good thief. I mean, I don't steal stuff to hurt people or anything. But I have to eat, you know?"

Luke would have frowned, but he'd had enough experience with street urchins on Tatooine and the children who lived in the undercity on Coruscant to know it was simply a way of life to some. Still, being a parent himself, he wished he could make it so no child had to steal just to stay fed.

"Guess that puts all that extra dexterity that being a gymnast gives you to good use," he said tactfully. "Isn't there somewhere you can go to get food though?"

"I was gonna stay at the circus for a while. I was at a kind of girls home for a while, but I found out the director was stealing money and she tried to kill me. So I ran away." There was a hard set to her face as she relayed the story.

If Selina had been a Jedi, she'd have felt sympathy flooding from Luke. "I'm sorry," he said, and even though she couldn't feel it in the Force she could probably hear it by the tone of his voice. "Did you turn the director in?"

Selina shook her head. "No one would have listened. So I made her give me the jewels she bought with the stolen money. And made her erase my name from all the systems so it would be like I didn't exist. And then I could go anywhere and no one would bother me."

He'd been trying to steer the conversation in a happier direction, and it'd taken again a turn for the sad. Luke wondered if he'd spent so much time being the serious Jedi Grand Master that he'd forgotten the fun part of being a Jedi--the travel and the means of helping people.

"So you're a gymnast, and you're good with your hands. Sounds like a pretty useful skill set to me... anything else you're interested in?" he asked, a little shy now.

"I like cats too. Sometimes they lived with me when I stayed in buildings and stuff. And the grown up me has cats so I guess I still like them when I live here." She paused for a moment. "I guess if I stay here, they'll be my cats."
