SUMMARY: Sally tries to make Sam lunch. It doesn't go quite like she expected.

It was Mother's Day, and as much as Sally tried to ignore the day whenever it came around, she'd decided to make Sam a special lunch. She remembered how hard her first Mother's Day without her mom had been, and even if his mom hadn't actually died, she still wasn't present in the City to celebrate the holiday. So she'd made chicken salad sandwiches, potato salad, and a fruit salad from scratch. As soon as the jello was ready everything would be set.

"Yeah, but there are better emotions than fine," she pointed out, and looked down at her plate. "...I kind of wanted to keep myself busy anyway."

She really hated this day.

He frowned and sat with her. "Are you okay?"

"I just don't like today all that much," she looked up and forced a smile. "But hey, I got to make stuff from scratch so there's that."

"Ah...Ah'm sorry." Sam spoke softly. "Ah imagine it wouldn't be all that easy for you."

"They say you get used to it, but you really don't," Sally murmured. "Eight years later and it's still just as raw sometimes. Other times it's not so bad."

She sipped her drink, and reached out a hand to touch his hand. "But I don't need to tell you that. You've lost people too."

"Everyone here has, Ah think," he forced a smile at her. "But if you're ever feelin' sad about your momma, you can talk to me. Ah lost mah daddy; Ah know how it feels."

"I know, Sam," she forced a smile back. "Do you have plans after lunch, or do you think we could just hang out? I think I'd like to tell you stories about my mom. You could tell me about your daddy if you wanted."

She really didn't want to be alone, not today, but she'd figure out something else if she needed to.

"Ah don't have to be nowhere else to be," he assured with a nod. "We can talk all day, if ya want."

She gave a small smile this time, though it was genuine. "Can we go to one of our rooms to talk after lunch?" Sally asked. "I really don't want just anyone able to listen, you know?"

"Sure," he agreed. "We can go to your room, if you want. Talk all afternoon."

She nodded. "I'd really like that."

Sally finished off her food and looked back up at him. "And next time I'll actually make the jello correctly."

She actually got a laugh out of that. Sam finished up as well, and grinned at her.

"Ah'll hold you to that, girl."

She gathered their dishes, and dropped them into the sink to wash later. "If I end up messing it up again you're not allowed to make fun though, okay?"

He did the same, then followed her. "Ah would never make fun of you. Ah swear!"

Sally reached for his hand as she started toward the stairs. "You're a really good guy, Sam," she told him. "And I'm really lucky. My mom would have liked you."

He took it, lacing their fingers as they walked. "Ah bet Ah would have liked her too, Sally. She raised a mighty fine daughter."

She squeezed his hand, and led him into her room. "You say the sweetest things to me."

"It's true," he assured her with another small smile. "Ah'd say just that to her, if Ah could ever meet her."

"I don't think that will ever actually be possible, but it means a lot that you would," she told him, and stretched up on her toes so she could kiss him.

He leaned down half way, wrapping his arms around her back as he kissed her back.

She sighed happily when she finally pulled back, and nodded toward her bed. "Want to get comfy while we talk?"

"Sure," Sam grinned, and pulled her down to her bed. He settled them nicely, and kept an arm around her shoulders. "How's this?"

"Perfect," she told him, and rested her head on his shoulder. "She used to smell like lilies, my mom. I think it was perfume but I've never found the exact scent anywhere."

"Coulda been perfume...maybe some kinda lotion," Sam smiled softly. "Mah daddy always smelled like coal."

"I just smell every new scent I come across," she giggled. "I'll find it one day. I don't think I've ever really smelled coal. Do you like that smell?"
