SUMMARY: This log is forever open to fraternize, socialize, and otherwise eat pie in Ned's restaurant. Increasingly throughout the month, the Pie Hole will be decorated for Halloween! All day on the 31st there will be candy apples and popcorn balls behind the counter for trick-or-treaters and anyone else adventurous enough to come in wearing a Halloween costume.

October 4th, After Hours - Open

It's a little past the Pie Hole's usual closing time on Friday evening. By this hour, normally Minako would have flipped the sign on the door to "Closed" and locked up to finish cleaning up for the night. But today has... well, it's been a day.

It's not even that it's been a bad day, really. Minako hasn't sat still long enough to let her day go sour. She's made a concerted effort to keep herself occupied, too busy to think much about what day it is, and it's only now, late in the evening, that that relentless energy has given out on her and left her sitting alone at one of the tables in what ought to be an empty restaurant.

With one of her arms draped loosely over the tabletop and eyes half-lidded, she's resting her head against the crook of her elbow. The other hand holds one of her red earphones to her ear; its mate, trailing at the end of its cord, lies upended on the tabletop, letting out the sound of a guitar and a voice singing softly in Japanese.

"...at those times, I won't be angry at you, so
please, it would be best to quickly
forget about me, and move on with your life..."

Her voice hums along with the lines, wandering barely audibly through the notes.

"Let's promise that..."

When Kanaya emerges from the office, she's a little surprised to see there are still customers around. She'd been counting down one of the cash drawers and calculating out the tips, getting things ready to close. Since they're still open, she takes a moment to check on each of the customers, offering to refill their drinks, before she finds her way to Minako's table.

The other girl seems a bit preoccupied, and Kanaya isn't sure she wants to interrupt, so she just eases herself into a chair on the other side of the table, brows furrowed in mild concern as she waits until Minako might be more receptive.

Preoccupied and, to all appearances, very much in danger of falling asleep right there at the table. Soon enough, however, Kanaya's arrival registers and Minako snaps out of it with a little jolt, quickly bracing her hand on the table to lever herself more upright while the other reaches to click off her mp3 player.

"--Ah? Kanaya?" Rubbing wearily at her eyes, she looks around the restaurant, then glances down at her watch and winces, letting out a little sigh. "...how embarrassing. Sorry, I'll take care of closing up once these people are ready to leave, so you don't need to worry about staying late."

She lets out something between a scoff and a chuckle, a choffle maybe, then chins a hand with a wry grin. "I feel, perhaps, like I should be making that offer instead." The smile fades as her eyebrows raise, it's clear that Minako had just been miles away, but where exactly Kanaya isn't sure. "Is everything alright?"

[ Nelson tries, really tries, not to come to places like this too often. It's nothing against the food or the atmosphere in general, but he knows the strength of his own willpower and that, frequently, he's weak against temptation. It's hard to resist pie as it is, especially hard to resist pumpkin pie now that autumn's in full-swing.

Regardless, he sits down with a sigh and surveys the menu, hoping if he starts with something warm like a coffee that'll sate his appetite well enough. He's got enough time before work to decide either way. ]

Well. Would you look who it is. [ kanaya approaches nelson's table with her notepad out, pen at the ready and a small smile playing on her lips. she's only been at this a few days, but she likes to think she's gotten the hang of it. ]

Have you seen our specials for the day? Personally, I'd recommend the Strawberry Fields, but if you'd like I can get you something to drink while you consider your options.

[retropolis]

[ Nelson glances up, a little surprised and immediately a little sheepish. He considers her a nice enough girl -- for a teenager -- but he's a little paranoid she resents him lecturing her. Well. Encouraging, in his mind. ]

Ah, good morning. [ He manages a smile. ] A coffee would be great. I was considering something seasonal, but -- er... [ With great willpower he doesn't look down at his stomach. ] I haven't made up my mind yet. Maybe just the coffee.

[glowsferatu]

[ she gets enough people trying to lecture her, it's too much energy to resent all of them. nelson may be a little odd, but a far as adults go, he at least doesn't seem as naive or pandering as most of them she knows, surprisingly enough.

she scribbles across her pad, tapping the pen against it thoughtfully. it sounds like he may need a bit of convincing. ]

We'll start you off with the coffee, of course. Have you seen the toffee apple pie? I haven't had the opportunity to sample it myself yet, but just looking at it in the case, [ she waves a hand to show the counter display. ] well, it certainly does look tempting.

[Kiritsugu is quite clearly passing out fliers for the homeless shelter, as he has a sheaf of them with him, but he's only come in here for some coffee and pie, not to continue his charity work.

He's another one who should resist the pie and coffee, considering his health, but it's always been too easy for him to eat junk food. At Nelson's sigh, he turns toward him, almost smiling.]

Dangerous, isn't it?

[retropolis]

[ Nelson glances over, a little startled, then takes a moment to look the man over before he decides to respond. ]

Dangerous? [ He's not sure what's being referred to. After another moment he holds the menu up, chuckling. ] You mean this? Only a little.

[For those that visit the Pie Hole, Lancer's ever charming and friendly disposition was just as much a mainstay as Minako's delicious pastries. And this month was no different. The flagging light and nip in the air did nothing to curb his boisterous spirit.

On his down time, between service, Lancer can be found decorating the premises with a modest Autumn flair, giving the place a festive atmosphere.

Along with the usual menus, there's a single, old school chalkboard covered in unusual, but legible script which reads:

[ when the sign goes up the first day, kanaya can't help being a bit baffled by it. halloween she knows, sure, but samhain is another matter entirely. the whole idea seems a bit redundant, so she waits until later in the day when they're less busy to ask him about it. ]

So, exactly how many holidays involving costuming do humans generally have in the one month?

[lucke]

[In the process of bussing a freshly vacated table, Lancer peeks over his shoulder at Kanaya curiously before chuckling.]

Well I don't know about all human holidays. I'm sure there's quite a few involving dressing up in one way or another. Samhain, on the other hand-

[He turns, a ludicrously high stack of dishes in his hands and a smirk on his face.]

-Is essentially Halloween. Or at least it was the original holiday Halloween pretends to be.

[glowsferatu]

[ she looks immediately concerned. such an undramatic reveal shouldn't inspire such a reaction, and yet it's written all over her face.

it's the dishes. ] You probably shouldn't do that, we don't want to risk breaking them.

[ she moves in to try to relieve his stack of his top half, bring it down to something safer. ] So, Halloween is something of an impostor, then?

[Damn. This is bad. The dog that keeps following him has followed him here, too. Kiritsugu sighs, trying to shoo the scruffy black terrier mix out the door as it wags its tail, clearly excited by the scent of baking food. What a problem. It is decidedly not his dog.]

B:
[Kiritsugu sits at the counter, not wanting to take up an entire table for himself. He may be in a pie establishment, but his underdeveloped sweet tooth has inspired him to get the soup and sandwich today. Along with his usual cup of coffee. Everything's still too hot to eat, so he blows on his coffee and surveys the restaurant. At first glance, he seems to be at ease, but someone very observant might notice that he doesn't let his guard down. He won't turn his back to the door.]

[ is this the first time kanaya's encountered an emiya with dog problems? no, but she hardly knows the connection. her first instinct is to be a bit blunt about the problem, but she's working with customers, she's supposed to be nice.

of course, she doesn't exactly mind dogs, either, and the establishment apparently has its own history with them. so, with a smile, she bends down to greet the little terrier. ]

Well, aren't you an enthusiastic little thing! I hope you know your manners, because it would set a poor example to all the other dogs if you aren't on your best behavior. [ she glances up at kiritsugu, her eyebrows raised but her smile held firmly in place. ] Does he have a leash?

[Emiyas appear to be inclined to have similar problems. It may be a family curse. Or a series of family curses.]

He's enthusiastic, all right. About food.

No. He doesn't. He's not my dog. [If he bought a leash for him, that would mean he owned him, which would mean he was going to have to care for another living being, which is not happening.

Although the dog acts as if it is Kiritsugu's, pausing and looking up at him, wagging its tail as he speaks. Kiritsugu meets its gaze, determined to be immune to puppy eyes.]

I can't speak for his manners.

[glowsferatu]

He may seem to think otherwise, I can't help but notice he followed you in.

[ she bends down a little further to scratch at the back of his neck. the dog turns his head to lick at her hand, causing her to snicker lightly. ] It doesn't seem like there should be a problem, however.

[ she rises back to her feet, folding her hands at the waist. ]

Shall I show you to a table?

[ pies weren't his usual thing. it was just the kind of entity you associated with happiness and holidays and moms from commercials set in the sixties. terry couldn't even remember the last time he'd had pie, or what kind of pie it'd been. his mom hadn't exactly been the baking type. especially not after he'd gotten her institutionalized.

he slid into a booth and tried to be as inconspicuous as possible, already regretting the decision to go out a little bit, in the back of his head. reaching for a menu, he glanced it over with skepticism clear on his face, as if even the names of the pies were a bit out of his spectrum.

under his breath, critically: ]

Pearway to Heaven? Really?

[She wasn't actually trying to come up behind him and eavesdrop or anything, really; Minako was just wiping down the booth behind Terry's and couldn't help catching that muttered comment.

Since she did catch it, she can't resist pausing to lean over the back of the booth and answer, quite cheerfully:]

It wasn't my idea. [Although she does think it's kind of cute.] It's Ned's recipe, though, so it's not like I can just go changing the names or anything.

[demonspawn]

[ he visibly tenses in his shoulders when that voice unexpectedly come from behind him. his eyebrows draw together a little, mouth turning down at the corners when he turns to glance at her. she must work here. he's vaguely familiar with her, maybe, from the network, but he can't say he remembers her name. ]

...Why. It's not like he'd know about it.

Well, there's always the chance that he could come back someday.

More importantly, I'd know. It wouldn't feel right. He put a lot of work and attention and feeling into this place; I don't want to wipe away the spirit he left behind here by just carelessly changing whatever I feel like.

[glowsferatu]

[ kanaya casually slides into the booth next to him, a plate in her hand carrying a slice of chocolate cream pie as black as they could get it, but not from being burnt. there's a bit of dark red filling oozing out the side when she sets i in front of him. ]

It's on me, we'll call it a reward for actually venturing beyond your front door.

[demonspawn]

[ it's admittedly a fitting piece of pie. he has to appreciate that. and then, he has to feel ever so slightly annoyed with himself for being even remotely pleased with something so simple as pie.

he picks up the fork and slowly (grudgingly) cuts off a piece. ]

I'm not a hermit. I just don't like crowds. Or sunlight.

Yes, yes, I know, you're our very own personal prince of darkness. You'll be paler than I normally am if this keeps up.

[ in her native form, of course, pale from the sunlight even when she isn't glowing. as it is now, while she's human, all that sun only makes her brown skin darker.

she tucks her hands under her chin, eagerly anticipating his reaction to the pie. ]
