Big Bang Three!

SUMMARY: Wherein the Doctor and Jack spend all their money on a big old party! Sorry Ian -_-;

The Doctor hopped around the house making sure everything was to his satisfaction. There were streamers and balloons filling every nook and cranny and all of it was especially tacky and wonderful! Humans sure knew how to make decoration!!

The small backyard managed to fit two bounce houses (a castle and a water based bounce house), and inflatable pool entirely too small for adults, and the grills. There was the danger of someone bouncing into the pool but the Doctor saw that as more opportunity for fun! Inside there was food on every flat surface and downstairs where once the aquacat pool was now was ready for dancing! Even if no one showed the Doctor was going to have a good time!

Of course the real show started at sundown with the Doctor's own firework show helped along with human gunpowder and Time Lord know-how. Hope someone has the fire department on speed dial!

Oh whoops. Um, okay, he'll see what this is even about. "No particular reason. I simply realized I'm at a party largely populated by people I don't know."

"Me too. But I have an excuse, I'm newish. You're just blueish, is that your excuse?" she blinks owlishly up at him as if this is the most serious question anyone has ever asked.

He's even less sure what to make of that! "No, this is simply a circle I don't often run in, I believe."

"Oh." She seems to contemplate that, staring at her own ankles. "Then why did you come?"

Well, that was a good question. "I couldn't say exactly. I suppose I enjoyed the prospect of meeting new people, perhaps."

"But then you sat here all alone." It kind of made her sad.

He rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly. "Well, deciding on such a task and actively putting it into practice can be very different undertakings!" Besides, when you look like he does, people will eventually either approach or avoid you, for good or ill.

She wrinkled her nose up, puzzling out what all those words meant strung together. "It just seems silly to come to a party and not talk to anyone. You should talk to Peter, he's just sitting there all alone too like a lump."

He'd admit that it wasn't entirely logical to suddenly feel less social after deciding to join a social gathering, but there it is. "I'm not sure which one is Peter. I know a Peter, but he certainly isn't here!"

"Oh, right. He's that one, with the hair." She swallows back an air bubble, eyes watering slightly as she points to a man sitting on the outskirts of the party. But I guess that's what forced socialization looks like. You! Have less of an excuse."

"Or merely a different sort of excuse." He peered around to where she was pointing. "But the hair? I think there are much more notable styles here than his." He points to Zevran, chilling somewhere on the other side of the yard. "That gentleman, for instance, appears to put much care into his, with admirable results!"

sqhwjgdjheghdw Buffy doesn't even know what to say to that Hank. Zevran kind of creeps her out, and he's creeping on Jack which is a double creep strike. "It's very shiny," is all she says, instead of getting into it.

"I think the miniature braid is a nice touch." He toys with his own hair, smile growing wider and lightly chuckling. "What do you think, should I adopt a braid in my own style?"

"I think I like it the way it is." She tilts her head, considering. "You already have the blue thing working for you, best not to get too busy."

He continues playing with his hair. "I wore it longer last year, but it was more silly ponytail than flowing mane."

This prompts Buffy to play with her own hair. "I've been thinking about cutting mine."

He folds his hands back in his lap and glances her way. "Not satisfied with it as it is, currently?"

"It's okay. I just think I need - a change?" She sounds unsure even to herself, hands dropping back to her own lap. Didn't peter and she agree, no haircuts?

He gives her a thoughtful look. "Perhaps it's not about the hair at all, but just a general feeling of stagnation that's expressing itself in this small way."

"Stagnation is a nice word for whatever this is." She hadn't meant to say it but she didn't bother taking it back, letting it hang in the air as she looked up at the night sky in idle fascination.

"The nice thing about the situation created by this place is that you no longer necessarily need to be defined by who you were before, what you did. Most of us have the opportunity for a fresh start." Heaven knows he took it.

"I don't really know what to do with this freshness," she admitted, frowning a little and still not making eye contact. "I've always been defined by my me-ness, my Buffyness. And my Slayerness. If I'm not one, how can I even be the other?"

He thought about this for a moment. "You don't necessarily have to become a different person, but you have the option of finding a new way of expressing the person you've always been, merely unbounded by absent duties."
