[Well that was embarrassing! Kenzi had, for a moment, forgot where she was and thought she was calling Bo. Instead she got Gil, talk about rude wake up to reality. She hung up quickly because she didn't want to explain she called because she thought she was calling Bo. God, she missed her best friend. Admitting it to people just made it hurt more.

At least that's over now, right? She won't have to explain anything.

She flops down on the couch with some chips and starts flipping through the channels. She just wants to find something boring to watch and fall asleep now.]

How many? [Now he's got her curious.]

What? [Shit. She blinks at him.]

Did I say that? I must still be a little drunk.

[ NOPE, going to deflect again by focusing on her. He's oddly interested in what she means by "before" than his ridiculous rejections. ]

What do you mean? [ But as soon as he asks, it clicks. ] Were you... seeing someone before?

[Kenzi slumps down on the table, resting her head on her forearms.]

Nate. He-- Well, it doesn't matter. I screwed it up. At least he's safe and alive.

[ He inches in slowly, curious. ]

Nate?

[There's a small smile on her lips, but she still looks sad.]

Heh...he was my neighbor when I was six. He was the older neighbor boy I had a massive crush on. Then one day he moved away. I didn't thing I'd ever see him again and then one day he turned up on my doorstep because he...he saw this flier I put up looking for a band or musician for Bo's birthday.

We...reconnected. He still had this picture of me I gave him and a song I wrote about him. [She gives a soft laugh. The sting of forming tears causes her to blink a couple times.]

I couldn't ever tell him the truth about Bo or my friends. It wasn't my secret to tell, it was up the Fae and they didn't seem to want to bring him in on it. I--

Thing were getting really bad with the Fae. He-- I wanted him to be safe so I...lied to him. I told him I...that I didn't love him. Never did. That I just thought it was something I wanted.

[She buries her face against her forearms.] I'm pretty horrible. I broke his heart because I couldn't leave Bo.

[ Startled by her tears and panic setting in, he comes closer but his hands hover uncertain. ]

Kenzi... [ Is she still drunk? He get up from the chair to get closer, but it's all he does. He's fretting. What does he say? His mind scrambles for words. ] I'm sorry. I shouldn't have pried. [ He says quickly, laced with a tremendous amount of guilt.

But he listens to her story carefully. It doesn't sound at all like the carefree Kenzi he knows. ]

Kenzi?

[She remains where she is, face down against her forearms. It's hard to tell if she's crying or not. But when she lifts her head she pulls her sleeve over her hand to wipe her face.]

It's...fine. It's been months. Almost a year now? [She's not even sure anymore what with being brought here.]

[ Damn, what does he do? What do you tell a broken heart? ]

What you did... wasn't wrong. If it means protecting him... sometimes we do things we don't like to protect what's precious to us.

I...keep telling myself that. [She slowly sucks in a deep breath then lets it out just as slowly.]

But then I wonder if maybe I should have run off with him. But if I had...Bo... I don't even want to think of what Bo would have done without me there.

[ He then realizes something. He doesn't mean to change the subject, but he needs to know. ]

Is that what you meant when we saw the movie? That Oz was an excuse?

[She gives a slow nod.] Yeah.

[ Avoiding a married life isn't Oz's fault nor is he using Oz really for it. But he does use him for a lot of other excuses. ]

I see now.

[ He sighs. ]

What happened to him? Nate?

[Kenzi shrugs and takes a drink of water.] He left and I obviously haven't seen or talked to him since. I doubt he'd ever want to speak to me again after that.

You don't know that...

He was pretty angry. And I don't blame him any. I wouldn't want to ever see me again if I were him.

What if you explained it to him?

[ Then he wonders... would Oz hate him if he found out he hid the fact it was his father who cast him into the Abyss? Or that Gil had pointed his gun at him twice? ]

I can't. Not without telling him about the Fae and I'm not allowed to tell anyone about that. If I do I'll end up Fae food or have my memory wiped of everything or something.

[ He frowns. ]

And you would lose Bo. [ A sigh. ] Your world sounds just as complicated.

Yeah...no matter what happened I'd lose Bo. [And that was the biggest problem for her.]

Only if you know about the Fae.

Maybe one day it won't be so complicated and he'll be able to understand.

[ He wants to say if Nate did hear the story but not understand Kenzi's decision, then he's not worth it.

Elliot had been the same. He didn't understand Gil's decision to run away from the Nightrays. He didn't try and in the end, Gil never blamed him. It was easier for him to remain angry-- but safe. ]

[Kenzi gives a soft laugh.] You sound like Hale and his hopes that one day Fae can live with humans knowing about them and nothing bad happening.

[She doubts she'll live to see that day. If it comes it won't come until long after she's dead.]

Is it so bad to hope for something like that?

Fae feed on humans. And as it is the two sides can't get along. If that day comes I probably won't be around to see it.

I'd like to see it happen. And if anyone could make it happen I'm sure Hale could.

Hale? [ All these people she mentions, but he has no idea who they are. ]

He's a siren that works on the police force with Dyson. He's cool and has the absolute best cure for a hangover. [She smiles as she talks about Hale but it fades quickly enough.]

He comes from one of the influential Fae families. Like one of the original houses or something.
