DUEL MONSTERS TOURNAMENT ♠ ROUND 1

WHO: ANYONE AND EVERYONE
WHERE: Central Park and Harbor
WHEN: Saturday March, 20th early afternoon
WARNING: Swearing and card games
SUMMARY: Round 1 of the duel monster's tournament.
FORMAT: Whatever you want!

Months of planning and recreating an empire from the ground up was finally reaching its climax. Fireworks shot into the sky as the workers ran out of the way trying to avoid the large screen to which the firework stands were attached. If there was still anyone who had not heard that a Duel Monsters Tournament was being held in the city, the sights and sounds quickly informed them.

The same set up was found in the two locations. One at the center of Central Park and the other stretched next to the water by the harbor. The rules the duelists had been given told them where to meet and when to be sure they would be there for the beginning. Since Kaiba couldn’t be in two places at once, especially as he had his own duel to prepare for, a video had been pre-recorded to start the event. The screens turned on at the same time, the KaibaCorp logo flashing across the screen. It disappears to show a montage of duels fought by different monsters. Those who are paying close attention may even notice cards that Kaiba could have only found out about in the City. The montage ends with a Blue Eyes White Dragon destroying everything in its path and causing the screen to fade to white.

The blank screen suddenly changes again to a video of Kaiba. “Welcome to this City’s first chance at a Duel Monster’s Tournament!” it started. “You have had plenty of time to prepare, and now it’s time to show exactly what you can do. At the end of this announcement the tournament will officially start.

“Find your opponent and duel! The winner will go on to the next round. The loser can go home. You have all been given copies of the rules. Any cheating will be punished.”

The Kaiba in the video paused, emphasing a big-brother idea about how cheating would be caught and punished. The look changed into a smirk as he threw his hand forward and dramatically proclaimed,

Game Start!

(Make your own threads here for your individual duels. You can log as much of the action as you want. Remember you need to PM me with the winner of each duel before Sunday 11pm CST (whether or not the log is finished). If I don’t have a winner I will proclaim one for you to keep things moving. In case you've forgotten the brackets are here)

Though he was wary of the new Infernity monster - since it had zero attack and defense - Alastair endured the attack without a word. Gorlag was only docked points briefly, since the UFO Turtle's demise brought out another Fire monster from his deck. "I summon Tenkabito Shien in its place," he announced.

Kiryu nodded, although he gave the new monster a dirty look. He hadn't forgotten about that effect, but that didn't mean he liked it.

"End turn."
hackeralastair: (will you listen to me)

[personal profile] hackeralastair 2010-03-22 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly, a chunk of Alastair's deck was geared toward stopping Kaiba from playing his Crush Virus. At least it came in handy stopping other traps as well. "All right then, I draw."

He hoarded the new card and stared down Kiryu's monsters. One was immune to attack, the other had no points at all. Alastair suspected trouble under those face-down cards, but he wasn't going to win by passing on the chance to attack a vulnerable target. "Infernity Demon, attack Infernity Mirage!"
satisfiedsigner: ([DS] Aren't you interesting?)

[personal profile] satisfiedsigner 2010-03-22 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
Kiryu laughed and pressed the button to activate the first card he'd put down. That was exactly what he'd been hoping for.

"Trap card, open! Infernity Force! When an Infernity Monster is attacked while I have no cards in my hand, this negates the attack and destroys the attacking monster!"

[personal profile] hackeralastair 2010-03-22 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
"Dammit!" Alastair looked sharply at the borrowed monster as it exploded off the field. Gorlag dropped down to 2000 attack points. If only he had attacked with Tenkabito Shien...

"But it's not a continuous trap," he noticed. "I have two more monsters I can attack with - three if I really feel like it. Tenkabito Shien, attack that monster again!"
satisfiedsigner: ([DS] Maybe crying...)

[personal profile] satisfiedsigner 2010-03-22 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
Well, there wasn't much he could do about that. Kiryu crossed his arms in front of his face as his own monster exploded and disappeared, and his lifepoints quickly dropped to 6000.

[personal profile] hackeralastair 2010-03-22 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
Satisfied, Alastair gestured again. "That's enough for now. Gorlag is still stronger than your last monster, so I'll end my turn."
satisfiedsigner: (ooc [DS]: hurtful shame and deep lament)

[personal profile] satisfiedsigner 2010-03-22 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
"My turn. Draw."

Of course, he had to draw a card he wasn't hoping for until the end of the duel. He certainly didn't need it right now, and he didn't need it to take up space on his field.

He was reluctant to activate his other trap right now, but it was at least more helpful than this one. "And I'll end my turn."
hackeralastair: (determination)

[personal profile] hackeralastair 2010-03-22 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
"My move." Alastair drew, ordered his cards in his hand, and then grinned widely. "You have a hand, now. That leaves your Infernity Guardian vulnerable to attack. But first, I think Gorlag needs a little power-boost." He slapped down a monster from his hand. "I summon Flame Spirit Ignis, in attack mode!"

The other Fire monsters on the field were solely there to boost the Gorlag up to 2500, even if they had minor effects of their own. They were also too weak - there was only one that could take out Kiryu's last monster. "Gorlag, attack his Infernity Guardian!"
satisfiedsigner: ([DS] Trap cardou OPEN!)

[personal profile] satisfiedsigner 2010-03-22 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
"Trap card, open! Depth Amulet!" Kiryu waved the card in his hand and slipped it into the Graveyard slot. "Depth Amulet lets me negate an attack at the cost of a card in my hand. And it is continuous, for three of your turns."
hackeralastair: (srsface)

[personal profile] hackeralastair 2010-03-22 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
Alastair took a step back in surprise, as his Gorlag shrank back to its side of the field, thwarted. "What the hell card...? Nice move," he complimented, though with his serious face on. "So as long as you keep discarding the cards in your hand, you're almost untouchable." And his other two monsters were not strong enough to attack, now. It was an excellent strategy, he had to admit.

"Fine, then. There's nothing else I can do, so I end my turn."

[personal profile] satisfiedsigner 2010-03-22 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
Kiryu smiled a little at the compliment, but he didn't look too thrilled to be using it beyond actually saving his monster. "Heh, and usually I want to get rid of them...Draw!"

Kiryu hardly glanced at the card he drew before slipping it into a Spell/Trap slot. If he didn't get another monster soon...

"I set one card face down. Infernity Guardian attacks Tenkabito Shien."
hackeralastair: (ack)

[personal profile] hackeralastair 2010-03-22 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
The monster blasted away in another flashy shower of holographic battle effects. Kiryu was chipping away at Alastair's life points little by little, but also whittling down Gorlag's attack points. He had to maintain it, if he wanted to have a chance, but right now nothing could stop the one-off attacks.
hackeralastair: (profile glare)

[personal profile] hackeralastair 2010-03-22 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
"My draw." Crap crap crap. A monster that required him to remove a monster from play in order to summon. That was a decision he had to think about before making, even if he had already used Monster Reborn. No, wait! There was that other card in his hand...

Alastair slapped it onto the duel disk. "I summon Gaia Soul, the Combustable Collective." A blobby-looking ball of fire rose up on the field, with 2000 attack points. He couldn't attack this round thanks to the trap card on top of Infernity Guardian's effect, but that was fine for now. "And I switch Flame Spirit Ignis into defense mode. End turn!"

[personal profile] satisfiedsigner 2010-03-22 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
"My turn." Kiryu's attention was focused more on Alastair's newest monster than the card he just drew. He hated sitting here, waiting for the cards he needed to get rid of those monsters. He didn't have any way of boosting Infernity Guardian's attack, at least not that much.

"I play a monster in defense position. End turn."
hackeralastair: (lurking)

[personal profile] hackeralastair 2010-03-22 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
Alastair drew, and quietly tucked the card into his hand. It was an important one, but only for emergencies. He wanted to attack that new defense monster, but if it was also an Infernity monster, it would be for nothing. No, better off to wait one more round rather than waste effort. He didn't care if the stalemate didn't appeal to the handful of onlookers checking out the giant holograms. "No moves this turn, I'll just end it and see what you've got."
satisfiedsigner: ([DS] Trap cardou OPEN!)

[personal profile] satisfiedsigner 2010-03-22 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
"Depth Amulet is destroyed at the end of your turn." He slipped that card into the Graveyard. It had done what he needed it to do. "Draw!"

He hardly looked pleased by the card in his hand. Another one he couldn't use without his God. He never really expected his God to quickly find its way to the top of his deck--that was what his dragon's effect was for, but the cards that went with it didn't need to be here either.

"I'll set one card face down and Infernity Guardian will attack Flame Spirit Ignis."
hackeralastair: (profile normal)

[personal profile] hackeralastair 2010-03-22 03:58 am (UTC)(link)
Alastair let it go to the graveyard without fuss, watching Gorlag's attack strength fluctuate again. Both of his strongest monsters were now 2000 points, and Science Soldier was clogging up one of his monster slots. He's stalling for something, he warned himself. I bet it's the god card. I don't know what it does...I need to take him out before he gets it. But even if Gorlag and Gaia Soul were strong enough, he was stuck thanks to Infernity Guardian's effect. What to do?
satisfiedsigner: (ooc [DS]: hurtful shame and deep lament)

[personal profile] satisfiedsigner 2010-03-22 04:56 am (UTC)(link)
"End turn."

Alastair was almost right; he would love to draw his God right now. But it wasn't quite his ace, not in this deck. Too bad his ace was sitting in his extra deck where he couldn't get at it...
hackeralastair: (basically talking)

[personal profile] hackeralastair 2010-03-22 05:11 am (UTC)(link)
"Here we go!" Alastair drew, and immediately slid the card into a trap slot. "This face down. Gorlag, attack his face-down monster and bring it over to my side of the field!"
satisfiedsigner: ([DS] default)

[personal profile] satisfiedsigner 2010-03-22 05:25 am (UTC)(link)
Kiryu smirked as Infernity Revenger briefly appeared only to be destroyed and reappear on Alastair's side of the field. Gorlag would get 500 more points, but Alastair wouldn't get much else out of that attack.

"Infernity Revenger's effect only activates in the Graveyard. Nothing to worry about with him."
hackeralastair: (snarky)

[personal profile] hackeralastair 2010-03-22 05:33 am (UTC)(link)
"...ohh I see." Alastair's lips twitched - he'd just enslaved another monster with no attack value. Wonderful. "Shit, man, how many Infernity monsters are there? Fine, that's all from me. End turn."

Despite them being in a near dead-heat for so many turns, Alastair was surprised that the people watching their duel hadn't wandered away out of boredom. They seemed to be sticking around - maybe because they were so close and at stalemate. It wasn't over in a flash like other duels around the pier. Or were they scoffing at the guy with four monsters not being able to take out the single one facing him?

[personal profile] satisfiedsigner 2010-03-22 05:49 am (UTC)(link)
Kiryu chuckled, drawing his next card. "13 or 14. I don't use all of them. One card face down. Infernity Guardian attacks Infernity Revenger!"
hackeralastair: (taking life point damage)

[personal profile] hackeralastair 2010-03-22 06:07 am (UTC)(link)
Crap, that hurt. The drawback of Gorlag's effect was that the monster came over in attack mode, so it was the most vulnerable. Alastair was now down to 4500 after that, and since he had four cards in his hand and owned no Infernity monsters, the Revenger's effect was pointless for him. "Dammit!" he yelped again, mostly out of frustration. How could he change the Guardian's situation and make it vulnerable?
