[Sally sways back and forth on the balls of her heels. She's a ball of nervous energy. Not that she doesn't know a little combat but her force field makes it easy to slip away from any situation on the street instead of waiting around to fight. But she wants to learn!]

Weapons it should be able to handle.

[Sally pushes her shield into place and watches Dani, waiting.]

I've seen you in action, I think it will too. We're just gonna change it up and have you use it the same time as your shield.

[calls up a staff and throws it to Sally]

[Sally catches it but has to focus in order for it not to slip from her grip.]

This could be tricky. There was a time I could barely hold onto any food I was eating, Dani.

It's just a little experiment. [Dani pauses.]

You have decent reactions so that means you have good sense about how your own body moves. To get you to react offensively you have to use things outside your own body, things that are a little harder to control.

I'm willing to try anything.

[Sally swings the weapon, trying to get a feel for it.]

I just want to be able to be an asset to the team, you know?

You already are.

[Dani flows back into a stance.]

We're just adding a few more tricks.

Gotcha.

[Sally aims a hit for Dani's legs while stepping to the left.]

Good. I don't waste time on quitters.

[Dani jumps over the staff but slides across a shield that's in front of her and slips. Ending up dumped on the ground, she rolls to the right to avoid Sally on the left.

There's a slight grunt as Sally catches her across the back and Dani tumbles into a crouch. Dani takes a breath, that was much better.

She charges a fight pattern.]

I'm definitely not a quitter.

[Sally twists to avoid more contact and tries to use the staff to help propel herself. It always looked so easy in any of those Robin Hood movies.

It ends with her sprawled out on the ground and the staff a few feet in front of her.]

Omph.

[Dani's prepared for a number of surprises so she takes a flailing leg or arm in the pattern, watching Sally maneuver with the staff.

Okay, it's not her weapon. Yet. But it's an okay start.]

Yeah, that happens.

[She pushes herself up and retrieves the staff.]

I just have to figure out how to keep my balance as I move.

It'll get better with time. But that sometimes things like that happen in battle. So it's important to learn what you need to do while you're recovering from that kind of blow.

Thankfully my shield pops on if I'm in trouble. So hitting me when I'm down doesn't do too much damage besides disorient me.

That's a good advantage. So, let me check in here and ask, do you have any questions?

Not aside from wanting to know if we can work on this a few days a week?

[She moves the staff and frowns.]

And is this going to disappear?

Yeah, we can definitely do that.

[raises eyebrow at the staff]

It'll go away when I want it to. How was it? Is there a weapon you'd like to work with more?

[Sally considers that for a moment, moving the staff back and forth in her hands.]

I think I'd like to keep up with the staff. It seems like it could be a good weapon to help disable someone.

The important thing about weapons is that they're just tools. Staffs can be good for disabling someone but you could do that just as easily with a knife, gun, arrow, rock, lamp, whatever's handy.

I have to start somewhere though, right? So could it be with a staff and not a gun. I'd really prefer that.

That's true. And everyone has a preference for one thing or another. A staff seems like a good choice for you. Worked with one before?

Nuh uh. Today was my first day.

Good work with it. So I guess we'd better find a real one for you then.

That sounds like a good idea to me. And I'll work on incorporating it into any trainings we have as a team.

Good. Okay, I think we've got a good start here. The last thing I want to show you is just some movements with the staff to get you a little more comfortable. Get these down and you've got yourself a solid foundation for offensive techniques.

[She holds out the staff and nods.]

Whatever you show me I'll work on practicing.
