[Come December first, Zatanna's already done a number on the house. Mostly in that she has finally relinquished her death-grip on the spooky Halloween mansion that it had been for Halloween (that had morphed into Thankschilling Day).

By the eighth, she has given up on normalcy and forced snow upon the house itself and the front and backyards; it is natural and cold and wet to the touch. More importantly, it's clean. It doesn't melt much or get sloshy and muddy. The forest she'd created for Halloween remains, though not overgrown. The air is sweet with the smell of pine, but not thickly so. She's cleared it out a little, made it easier to navigate. There is now plenty of room for building snow people and snow forts, in addition to the occasional snowball fight.

The inside of the house no longer (quite as) spooky. The fireplace in the living room seems to permanently be full of logs and remains lit even when no one is home. Halfway through the month, a pine tree also appears, growing through some dimensional wormhole so it remains real without having to cut one down. The dining room has a warm glow from candles and wall sconces and the kitchen seems to always have some wonderful smell wafting from it.

There is a fat orange Persian walking around, dressed as a reindeer. It doesn't seem perturbed by its costume and appears quite content, although trying to curl up and sleep almost anywhere in between desired pettings. Hermes has become more mellowed out since Halloween (and much larger, too) and only wears antlers on his head. Teekl and Gabranth declined to join the festivities.

This holiday season is going to be good. Or, hopefully at least much better than last year's.]

I've noticed that about him. He's bullied Gaster out of her sleeping spots a few times.

I am sorry, he is quite ...headstrong.

[She quietly chuckles.] That's one way of putting it.

His namesake would be very disappointed in him.

Not quite as grumpy, I take it? Or is it something else? [Tell her more about yourself, baby-doo. :(]

(he doesn't quite pick up on it as he starts decorating again.) One, because I named a cat after him rather than a larger animal. Though, I feel that his judgmental stare is quite endearing.

[Well, he's never been one to offer more than certain aspects of himself. And she told him that she wouldn't pressure him, so...] A lot of cats have that, but he's got it down-pat.

So, what kind of large animal should you have chosen, then?

(that makes him think for a moment:) The loyalest of them all, I would imagine. (he looks uncomfortable for a moment before switching gears.)

There, almost done.

So, he's a Golden Retriever, huh? [She doesn't let this little bit of info slide through the cracks, however. She bumps his knee with hers.] Family's funny, sometimes. It's not always who you're related to.

(he gives her a small smile, reminding him to be in the present before he settles next to her.)

Judge Drace would find this most uncouth. (he offers her a piece of information about him.) Biscuits, rather than - (he waves his hand:) Tutoring, or something useful.

Ah, you've mentioned her before. [Even that she's a she! Zee remembers!] Cookies are as useful as tutoring. You can't flourish without love and affection, Larsa.

And sometimes you have to kick back and enjoy yourself.

I was very lucky to have the love and affection of not only my guardians, my brother and my father. (he offers her a cookie:) But of you as well.

That may be the case, but sometimes you have to show it. Knowing it is all well and good, but having it reaffirmed is nice. [She takes it from him with a small nod of thanks.] I am sorry that I haven't shown it as much as I should, lately.

You came back. (he reassures her, resting his hand on her own.) That is all the reaffirmation I need.

[Her fingers flex under his.] I'm not going anywhere, kiddo. You're stuck with me now. Should've thought twice that night you called me.

I should not have called in the first place. (yes, he should have but lets be real, she has no obligation to look after him. she does it because she's a good person looking after a kid. he can't expect her to stay.)

A pity that you've sealed your fate, huh? [All she had to do was get him out of there. And this has turned into something more than she'd originally planned. A roof over his head, knowing he'd have someone to support him if required -- that's all she planned on being. She wasn't the worst, but she was far from the best. Part of her wanted to strive for the latter, however.] Like I said, you're stuck with me. Until someone from your world comes and decides to swoop you away from me, one of us leaves, or you come of age and get tired of me.
