The guests into an auditorium transformed. Through the magic of papier mache, the room has been decked out like a speakeasy, the refreshments laid out on a very makeshift bar that will not stock alcohol as long as they can prevent it. The whole room is cast with a cool blue light, and a jazz band's been hired to take the stage for an hour before leaving the rest of the evening to the DJ.

It was time to get this party started.

Who's your date? [ She doesn't see Bucky here, but she does remember Kate said she's been moving on from him. ] Did he wear the exact same mustache, too?

[recurve]

Alex. [She points across the room to wherever the little fear god-let is parked, then smiles conspiratorially.] He let me dress him.

[gevurah]

[ He's so tiny... but she says nothing. Prom is about fun, anyway. ]

Willingly? I wonder how you roped him into doing that.

[recurve]

Yeah. I'm not exactly sure myself, except that he's a pre-cog and he knew it would be fun, I guess.

[gevurah]

Without any trouble, I hope?

[ A school full of mostly super powered teenagers. A lot of things could go wrong. ]

[recurve]

None that I've seen. To be honest, he's kind of being a wet blanket about the whole thing now that we're here.

[gevurah]

He'll warm up, I'm sure. It's prom.

[recurve]

I'm pretty sure he'd rather be home playing Xbox.

[gevurah]

But he's here with you.

[recurve]

Yeah. Weird.

[gevurah]

You make it sound like it's a rare occurrence for you.

[ But Little Kate's very pretty. Big Kate can't imagine many guys turning her down. ]

[recurve]

Not with guys in general, just the little one. I'm not sure if we're actually friends or not, it's... kind of uncomfortable.

[gevurah]

[ This just got confusing. She arches an eyebrow. ]

How do you mean?

[recurve]

That's just it! I can't even explain it. I can't read this kid, like, at all! Sometimes he does what I say and enthusiastically plays along, sometimes he digs his heels in and refuses to budge on anything.

[gevurah]

He could be warming up to you.

[recurve]

Could be. It's not like I've been a jerk or anything.

[gevurah]

Little boys can be confusing, I know. [ And her gaze flickers over to wherever Damian is for a fleeting moment. ]

[recurve]

That's what I get for asking a thirteen year old to be my date.

[gevurah]

I always thought boys liked attention from older girls.

[recurve]

So did I. But what do we know?

[gevurah]

[ She adjusts her bow tie, then shifts her weight from one foot to another. ]

Women can be just as complex.

[recurve]

Oh totally. Like Verdi said, la donna è mobile. Women and little boys, both.

[gevurah]

[ A nod. ]

How are your summer plans coming along?

[recurve]

They're coming along. Nill and I are going to Coney Island, and Bucky's taking me to the beach. [She seems pleased by both of these things.]

[gevurah]

You spoke to Nill? I'm glad.
