A Night in West Egg

The guests into an auditorium transformed. Through the magic of papier mache, the room has been decked out like a speakeasy, the refreshments laid out on a very makeshift bar that will not stock alcohol as long as they can prevent it. The whole room is cast with a cool blue light, and a jazz band's been hired to take the stage for an hour before leaving the rest of the evening to the DJ.

It was time to get this party started.

This isn't what I'd normally consider entertaining. Or productive.

[She considers this for a moment, leaning back against the wall, and nodding. For once, they were in agreement.]

I came mostly because I wanted to see what everybody was talking about.

So far, I am less than impressed.

It's entertainment for the lowest common denominator. They listen to mindless music and dance and act like it's the greatest thing in the world.

I know how to dance.

What they are doing is not dancing.

Don't tell me you know classical dance.

Why not?

Is it that difficult to believe?

Not really. But no one bothers with it, anymore.

Except I am not from this time.

Papa taught me just before he grew too weak to leave his bed. Even though we were not among those able to attend formal events, I still liked to learn.

And you still enjoy it?

I have not had much of a chance to since arriving here. As you said, no one else "bothers" with it.

But if I did, then yes. I would enjoy it very much.
