A Night in West Egg

The guests into an auditorium transformed. Through the magic of papier mache, the room has been decked out like a speakeasy, the refreshments laid out on a very makeshift bar that will not stock alcohol as long as they can prevent it. The whole room is cast with a cool blue light, and a jazz band's been hired to take the stage for an hour before leaving the rest of the evening to the DJ.

It was time to get this party started.

[Oh man now she's on a roll.]

Oh? What would you prefer for round two?

I hear dinner and a movie's a classic. [ Yeah he's halfway smirking now. ]

Not that I'd necessarily be opposed to throwing down again sometime.

Maybe we could do both. Not on the same day, of course.

[batmantled]

I know I hate going out to a nice place hot and sweaty. [ yup he even said it mostly with a straight face. ]

Spreading it out's probably for the best.

[symmachy]

[Smirk.] I can't say I've ever felt that. [Because she doesn't sweat.]

I agree.

[batmantled]

[ huh ]

So are you still on patrol or can I walk you back inside? We could always sneak a dance in as long as the kids are occupied.

[symmachy]

[That gets a genuine smile out of her. She offers him her hand.]

A dance sounds fantastic.

[batmantled]

[ He takes the hand when it's offered and tucks it under his arm. He's really not in any hurry to get back inside, but he'll start leading in that direction. ]

Looks like I missed a lot while I was out of commission.

[symmachy]

[She follows beside him, actually happy to have company.]

Nothing you can't catch up on.

[batmantled]

Yeah, I hope not. [ Company is definitely a nice change. A change from the hours he'd spent lurking at the hospital at home; a change from the closed up loneliness of the office here. ]

How have things been at the dojo?

[symmachy]

[Baby, Scatty will always keep you company.]

Excellent. I've started a women's self-defense class on Friday nights. [And karaoke after, but he doesn't need to know that.]

[batmantled]

Sounds like a blast. [ He'll keep that admiring little headshake mostly to himself. ]

With the way the disasters roll in it's nice people getting ready for the danger ahead of time.

[symmachy]

It is. They're a promising group. [Already flipping one another on their third class, it almost brings a tear to her eye.]

No kidding. I'd rather have them be prepared, which is why the class is free.

[batmantled]

I'm glad somebody's taking the initiative. [ And truth be told it's not really a surprise. And oh look, they're almost inside. He'll reach ahead for the door and open it, gentleman style. ]

The way the Porter's been sending away my sparring partners I'm almost afraid to turn around these days.

[symmachy]

[She is adequately charmed as she goes inside and waits for him to follow.] It's what I was taught to do.

[Scatty laughs.] I've been here for about three years. I don't think she's going to send me away anytime soon, so I'll spar with you anytime.

[batmantled]

Well, who am I to turn down an offer like that? [ He'll follow and then reach for her hand again. A small, casual gesture. ]

Dinner first, though.

[One she accepts.]

Then it's a date.
