The guests into an auditorium transformed. Through the magic of papier mache, the room has been decked out like a speakeasy, the refreshments laid out on a very makeshift bar that will not stock alcohol as long as they can prevent it. The whole room is cast with a cool blue light, and a jazz band's been hired to take the stage for an hour before leaving the rest of the evening to the DJ.

It was time to get this party started.

Bruce? [Oh wait... he means Batman. Heh. She remembers that show...] You mean your Dad.

Yeah... [ Suddenly awkward. ]

Forgot Jason might not have mentioned him.

He has. But not a lot. [It seems like a touchy subject...] I met Bruce before, you know. Back when he was here in the City.

[ Now that earns something like a startled double-take. ]

He actually introduced you?

[Which in turn earns a trollish laugh.]

Oh no. I introduced myself.

[Don't give Jason any credit. He doesn't deserve it.]

Bet that went over well. [ oh to be a fly on the wall for that encounter. ]

Yeah. It's weird because in my world, you guys are on TV and stuff.

[batmantled]

Now that's a new one. [ SHE MUST MEAN AS REPS FOR WAYNE ENTERPRISES...

OR SOMETHING... ]

Funny, cause so far I don't think I've met anybody else who'd even heard of Gotham if they didn't come from some version of my world.

That probably because most of us aren't comic reading dorks, Dick.

[batmantled]

[ ...give him a minute. ]

...Okay, wait, back up. You're saying you read about us in- in a comic book?

[sweetvalleygirl]

Not me personally. I'm not a giant dork.

[batmantled]

But you knew who Bruce was.

[sweetvalleygirl]

Well, yeah. Everyone knows Bruce Wayne is Batman. That's like common knowledge for anyone with any sense of pop culture.

[batmantled]

[ He could think fast and dredge up a new lie. Change the subject. Deflect with a nonsequitor. Instead he'll force a small laugh and try a headshake. And neatly dislodge his arm because wow suddenly his palms are sweating. ]

Begs the question of how you explain why Batman's still in the city when Bruce hasn't been here in almost a year.

[She gives him the most somber of looks, staring at him very intently.]

No it doesn't.

[She then gives him an evil grin.]

[ She knows. Somehow, inexplicably she's telling the truth. Or repeating something Jason said.

Really, he should've been more prepared for this. ]

I've lived in Gotham long enough now to tell you we'd know if it was somebody else wearing the mask.

And I've watched enough TV to know that the people of Gotham are stupid as hell.

[batmantled]

I'm sure it isn't exactly how they show it on TV.

[ ....he hopes, anyway ]

I'm talking about real life, Jessica. He's an icon. Not somebody any old person could imitate.

[sweetvalleygirl]

Not any old person.

[She rolls her eyes.]

Look, it's a logical leap I'm making. If someone else had to be Batman while Batman was gone, of course it's gonna be Robin. Tell me I'm wrong.

[batmantled]

[ Oh god how much does she know? ]

...Okay, maybe you have a little bit of a point there. Or you would if Robin could stand in the boots without falling inside.

[ oops was that too much ]

Come on, you've seen that kid. I mean the real one, that's here already.

[sweetvalleygirl]

Dick.

[She gives him a look of disbelief. One that says 'how stupid do you think I am?' Her voice gets very low and she leans in closer to him.]

The Robin on TV isn't him. It's you.

[batmantled]

[ He's been in the field long enough to know when he's been beaten. He lets out a small sigh, and then rubs a hand along the back of his neck. ]

When did you find out?

[sweetvalleygirl]

Right now. [Evil smirk.] You could've told me I was wrong.

[batmantled]

[ He... just stares. For a few long, halfway disbelieving seconds. Then he tilts his head back and laughs. ]

Okay, score one for team out-of-towner.

[sweetvalleygirl]

Hahaha, yeah! Go me!

[Jessica laughs too, but her expression quickly goes serious again.]

Don't worry about me telling. I know lots of people's secret identities but I never tell them to anybody.
