A Night in West Egg

The guests into an auditorium transformed. Through the magic of papier mache, the room has been decked out like a speakeasy, the refreshments laid out on a very makeshift bar that will not stock alcohol as long as they can prevent it. The whole room is cast with a cool blue light, and a jazz band's been hired to take the stage for an hour before leaving the rest of the evening to the DJ.

It was time to get this party started.

[Whelp, following is exactly what she does. But Nill's wings almost automatically flare out to help her keep her balance. Yes, this is very convenient.]

[ Woah! John is stopping and checking those out. He's never seen them in person. ]

That's really neat! You're kind of like an angel, huh?

[A slight blush makes its way to her face, and she shrugs a little. Nill had given up correcting people a long time ago. She was just a regular person who happened to have wings.]

[ Possibly for the best. It might be hard without writing it all out anyways, and something like that is hard to do when you're on the dance floor. The good news is that John doesn't harp on it. ]

I bet you can come up with awesome dances that include them though!

[This genuinely surprises her! Nill used her wings for balance and such, but she had never... incorporated them into a dance before. It sounded difficult (if maybe very interesting). She grins at him, awkwardness fading.]

Okay, ready?

[ He's taking both of her hands in his. He's not sure what he's doing, but he's just been making things up as he went all night long anyways. ]

[Nill nods, holding his hands tight (in reality, it was still pretty gentle). Whatever he did, she would do her best to match.]

[ He gives her hands a reassuring squeeze before he lifts their arms up. ]

First we start like this.

An then.

[ Spinning her around a little, still holding onto her hands. ]

[She stumbles just once before understanding what he's doing, and gives a firm nod. Alright, spinning. She could do that. And holding his hands at the same time? Easy enough!]

[ It's kind of fun, right? Maybe a little more alarming when John starts lifting them up into the air as he does it. ]

[It's very suddenly that she notices that her feet are no longer touching the ground. Her eyes go wide, and she looks down for a moment. They were floating! It wasn't her, so was it him? Nill's wings flared, doing their best to help her keep balance, just in case. He seemed to be alright with keeping them steady, but she wanted to be safe. Slowly, a grin spreads over her face.]

[ That grin must be infectious, because he's grinning now too. And he'll spin them slowly now, so she doesn't have to feel unbalanced or unsettled as they go about this. ]

You okay?

[culver]

[She can't stop grinning. She was flying--sort of. It was closer than she'd ever been able to do on her own. And... gentler than she had imagined. Nill nods, loosening her grip on his hands (she might have been squeezing him a little, and hurting him was the last thing she wanted to do).]

[ A little bit of hand squeezing won't hurt John too much. He'd been through worse, but if he had actually realized she was easing up for his sake he would have probably appreciated it. Either way he's not too concerned for her. He could hold her up without having to hold hands, it just makes it harder to dance. ]

Okay good! Then lets juuuuust...

[ And whoosh, up they go above the heads of the people on the dance floor as he sweeps her across the floor. ]

[It isn't until they're above the heads of the other Prom-goers that what's happening truly sinks in. And Nill loves every second of it. Not necessarily being higher up than other people, but just the sensation of being in the air. Her smile turns into a silent laugh, her mouth open and her shoulder shaking slightly with the thrill of it.]

[ He's never seen someone this excited to be flying before. Well, except for his buddy who he took for a car ride back on Skaia, but it had been so long since that happened that John had mostly forgotten about it at this point. He'd run into other people in the air that could fly themselves, but he didn't usually bring people with him.

If this is the reaction people had though, he should do it more often!

He laughs too, though a lot more loudly, whooshing them both around the dance floor (or above it at least) for the remainder of the song. Only finding a place to carefully float them back down to the floor. ]

[Nill might have been a special case, when it came to flying. When first meeting someone, nine times out of ten they asked if she could fly. It was a sore subject for her, as much as she tried not to let it show.

Once her feet hit the ground again, she can't even take the time to be sad that she isn't in the air anymore. She's too elated. Nill throws her arms around John's neck for a hug, smiling so her face hurt.]

[ John could safely say out of all the ways she could have expressed her gratitude a hug was not what he was expecting! He didn't mind, he was just caught a little off guard, and had to slide his right foot back to keep his balance.

It takes him a few seconds, but he does eventually wrap his arms around her back to hug her back. ]

[She wants to tell him thank you, but knew that it was rude to just barge into someone's mind, so she hopes that her gestures and expression can express it well enough. After a few moments of hugging she pulls away, not sure what to do now but still going off the high from flying (pun intended). But she does see Damian across the dance floor and points in his direction; she should probably spend some time with her date oops.]

[ Not that John would mind that besides the initial surprise, since he has no idea at all that Nill is even capable of something along those lines. Besides, he figures the hug is pretty much a thank you anyways, and is grinning like an idiot until she points behind her and--

Oh, huh! He thinks he might have seen that kid somewhere before. ]

Is that a friend of yours?

[ She probably wanted to go talk to him too, there were a lot of people around here that John knew and was having fun talking to, so he assumed it was probably the same for Nill. ]

[ Stepping back so he's out of Nill's way. ]
