A Night in West Egg

The guests into an auditorium transformed. Through the magic of papier mache, the room has been decked out like a speakeasy, the refreshments laid out on a very makeshift bar that will not stock alcohol as long as they can prevent it. The whole room is cast with a cool blue light, and a jazz band's been hired to take the stage for an hour before leaving the rest of the evening to the DJ.

It was time to get this party started.

[ He might miss the compliment return, but he gets the appreciation from her. He opens his mouth, about to ask "How long she's been here" before realizing something. For all the times he's spoken with Nill over the network, she's never actually spoken back, always typed. He doesn't know exactly what that means, but he can hazard a guess that for whatever reason she doesn't talk (either doesn't want to or doesn't like to). So he opts for a yes or no instead. ]

Have you been here for awhile?

[The hesitation isn't missed. She can practically see the wheels turning in his head, and waits patiently for him to decide what to do. If he chose to speak whatever was initially on his mind, there would be the song and dance of her explaining her muteness. So it was probably lucky that he did go for yes-or-no. And she was openly thankful for that.

The blonde shakes her head, and then tilts her head, reciprocating the question.]

[ Lucky indeed! Since it has to be a pain in the ass to have to try to explain you can't talk every time, it's gotta be at least a small relief whenever someone avoids the need for that. And he thinks he's starting to get what some of the movements and all of that means. ]

Not too long, but long enough that I am kind of tired and needed to take a breather. I guess that means you haven't danced yet, right?

[It did get a bit tiresome sometimes, but Nill was one patient young woman. She shakes her head; no, she hadn't danced yet. To be honest, she was a little unsure about dancing. She had gone to proms before, and had always danced a little, but it had been more of an awkward wobbling. But at seventeen years old, she figured that she should at least be able to do a few steps, right? But that didn't make the idea less daunting.]

[ He had that feeling, but he won't say that. Then again, not having been here that long at all, it wasn't unreasonable she hadn't had a chance to dance yet. ]

You wanna?

[ Pointing over to where the majority if the dancing is taking place. ]

[That catches her by surprise. But... well, it would definitely be nice. And why not? Suddenly sure, the blonde nods. Yes, she would very much like to dance.]

Do you want to wait for this song to be over? I can show you a couple dances too if you like. I don't actually know any myself, but I am getting really good at making them up.

[culver]

[Her face lights up at that. He knew how to dance! Yes, that would be great. She nods, eager, already anxious for a new song to start.]

[ Saying John knows how to dance is being very generous, but there's no reason to tell her that right now. ]

I'm pretty sure this one is almost over.

[ Looking intently at the dance floor for a few moments and sure enough the music seems to be slowing down to an end. ]

[She will find out in due time, of course. Nodding, Nill reaches out to take his hand so one of them can lead the way to the dance floor. She's ready whenever he is.]

[ Grabbing onto her hand and making his way over to the dancefloor. ]

[She follows, determined to not fall on her face or step on his feet.]

[ It's okay, John's a tough kid, he can deal with a little feet stepping! Though not wanting to fall on her face is reasonable enough. And once they get to the middle of the floor, with the way John starts dancing, there is a lot of ways one could trip and hurt themselves if they followed his lead. ]

[Whelp, following is exactly what she does. But Nill's wings almost automatically flare out to help her keep her balance. Yes, this is very convenient.]

[ Woah! John is stopping and checking those out. He's never seen them in person. ]

That's really neat! You're kind of like an angel, huh?

[culver]

[A slight blush makes its way to her face, and she shrugs a little. Nill had given up correcting people a long time ago. She was just a regular person who happened to have wings.]

[ Possibly for the best. It might be hard without writing it all out anyways, and something like that is hard to do when you're on the dance floor. The good news is that John doesn't harp on it. ]

I bet you can come up with awesome dances that include them though!

[This genuinely surprises her! Nill used her wings for balance and such, but she had never... incorporated them into a dance before. It sounded difficult (if maybe very interesting). She grins at him, awkwardness fading.]

Okay, ready?

[ He's taking both of her hands in his. He's not sure what he's doing, but he's just been making things up as he went all night long anyways. ]

[Nill nods, holding his hands tight (in reality, it was still pretty gentle). Whatever he did, she would do her best to match.]

[ He gives her hands a reassuring squeeze before he lifts their arms up. ]

First we start like this.

An then.

[ Spinning her around a little, still holding onto her hands. ]

[She stumbles just once before understanding what he's doing, and gives a firm nod. Alright, spinning. She could do that. And holding his hands at the same time? Easy enough!]

[ It's kind of fun, right? Maybe a little more alarming when John starts lifting them up into the air as he does it. ]

[culver]

[It's very suddenly that she notices that her feet are no longer touching the ground. Her eyes go wide, and she looks down for a moment. They were floating! It wasn't her, so was it him? Nill's wings flared, doing their best to help her keep balance, just in case. He seemed to be alright with keeping them steady, but she wanted to be safe. Slowly, a grin spreads over her face.]

[ That grin must be infectious, because he's grinning now too. And he'll spin them slowly now, so she doesn't have to feel unbalanced or unsettled as they go about this. ]
