A Night in West Egg

The guests into an auditorium transformed. Through the magic of papier mache, the room has been decked out like a speakeasy, the refreshments laid out on a very makeshift bar that will not stock alcohol as long as they can prevent it. The whole room is cast with a cool blue light, and a jazz band's been hired to take the stage for an hour before leaving the rest of the evening to the DJ.

It was time to get this party started.

[ He's just...eyeing her, because she's like fourteen and if she's ever had alcohol of any kind before, he'll be impressed. ]

[ If Kate were still single, she'd offer a cheesy pick-up line or flirt considering how drop dead gorgeous Carol looks tonight. She approaches from the side, a glass of punch in one hand. ]

[ she refills her cup, holding onto it so she can sip it slowly this time ] Another human custom? I sure am learning a lot tonight.

[Midii recognized the familiar face off to one side. Looking about as comfortable in her surroundings as she was. Her own dress seemed to pale in comparison to Nill's adorable outfit...but, fortunately, Midii had never been particularly self-conscious about her appearance.]

[Still, she approached with a cautious smile. Hoping she wasn't interrupting.]

[It took Hank a moment to close the distance once he noticed the fight, and a lot of other attendants for him to bound over, but he wastes no time in dropping in a hand to scoop up and hold the girl from dishing out any further beating.]

And just what is going on here?!

[At first glance, he doesn't recognize either of them. Whether they're students or not is something his three-month absence couldn't answer, but looking closer at the orange birdboy he realizes he has a face he'd seen in detention rather often. Why he's a bird is anyone's guess.]

[ Jessica gets a smile while he's making his way past the dance floor. At least somebody's having fun. ]

Knocking 'em dead?

[She waves to Dick, pushing past the other dancers to get to him.]

You know it. And dancing all alone.

It's nothing, just... There's nothing left to do. I passed and I won't be seeing these kids again. I don't care about it.

[A pause, where he takes his hands from his pockets, crosses his arms instead.]

... But it's weird. What do I do if I can't come back here?

[She gives him a puzzled look. What is he up to........]

[ ok looking up from her book fully now ]

I don't dance. Really, I don't need to be set up.

Jessica. (since it is a ball, he does do a little bow.) You look quite lovely tonight.

[He knows it isn't. But he's tempted to just push him out there and make him have a go at it.]

[ He glances around the room, and Hanks' not a hard guy to spot. He laughs a little at the idea. ]

I wonder if it's prescription.

[ she blushes a little, holding her open book to her chest ]

Wow, um. Thanks. How's the night been for you so far?

[Hank gives the room a glance. That had kind of bothered him, too.]

Yes, we had a much more varied crowd last year. I wonder what's changed since?

[professorlionface]

[There definitely won't be one breaking out behind them in the next five minutes or anything.]

We came very close while the band was still playing! Did you happen to see it?

[professorlionface]

[He adjusts his monocle and actually stands up straight for once, which just makes him kind of tower a bit, holding his lapels in quiet dignity.]

Well, someone made the suggestion and I just couldn't ignore it! Just between you and me, I'm nearly half-blind with this thing.

[Hank steps to the side to let him in.] Be my guest! Just remember, if you like it, all compliments should be directed to Shirley Bennett at the Pie Hole. Lovely little place, but they could certainly use the business.

Quite fun! This place is so very fascinating and completely different to the many other balls I have attended.
